Counseling

Individual, family, and group counseling are available both in the shelters and in community offices in every borough. In addition to counseling, case managers provide assistance with finding shelter, food, transportation and other practical needs. They work with victims of domestic violence to assist them in planning for a safe future for themselves and their children.

Counseling Center: Mental Health Treatment

Since 1988, Safe Horizon’s Counseling Center, a New York State-licensed mental health clinic, has specialized in meeting the complex needs of individuals and their families who have been victims of crime and abuse. Our philosophy is one that supports and encourages the active participation of our clients in the course, scope, and pace of their treatment. This helps clients regain the sense of control over their lives that is often lost due to the trauma they experienced.

Support Groups

Although everybody grieves and experiences emotional pain in very individual ways, when we come together to share our experiences, we see that there are many similarities too. Support groups can help you find strength and support in those similarities.

Safe Horizon offers support groups for women coping with the trauma of domestic violence, for people who lost a family member to homicide, for incest survivors, for victims of child abuse and their non-offending parents, for rape and sexual assault victims, as well as others.

After 9/11 – Healing and Recovery

Although Safe Horizon's 9/11 Mental Health Program ended as of 12/31/07, some services remain in NYC for those impacted by the 9/11 attack as highlighted in the links below.

Safe Horizon has been proud to provide an array of critical services to hundreds of thousands of people impacted by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. This included providing direct assistance to rescue and recovery workers, families who lost loved ones, those who were injured, residents who were displaced from their homes, those who were economically impacted, as well as many New Yorkers who witnessed, evacuated, and survived the attacks. Millions of dollars were distributed to survivors, thousands of hours of mental health services were provided, and community wellness and educational services were offered to thousands of New Yorkers.

The New York Disaster Interfaith Services website at www.nydis.org provides links to a wealth of referrals.
